Rodando con los Skorpion (Rolling with Skorpions)

Skating with the Skorpions is a fascinating adventure because they open up our horizon to surfaces which were unknown for many of us before. The only thing you need to skate with them is sturdy and comfortable shoes, as mountain boots or the like, and a desire to live new experiences on wheels. It is also very advisable to use them with quality protections, as falling on a surface which is rougher than roadways could be more painful.

Skorpion skates have specific models for men, women and children, so it is possible to adapt their features in each case. The model for men is broader, both in the boot support area and in the wheel area, and it is heavier than the model for women. The model for children has smaller and narrower wheels, and stoppers on both skates.

The Skorpions have a Zytel® structure, which is a polymer by DuPond that creates a relatively light skate compared with its size, but resistant to certain types of obstacles. It has two pairs of parallel wheels that offer more stability and, consequently, are able to manage small differences in level and obstacles of the surface. They have two strap sets which can be adjusted to fit each skater’s preference.

One of the novelties of this type of skate is an integrated set of four shock absorbers to help overcome the obstacles and control turns more precisely. An important issue is that each skate can be adapted for 3 or 4 consecutive sizes, so it is possible to share them with other skaters, but it is particularly useful in case of children, as they can be adjusted while they grow. As most skates, they have a braking system with two stoppers in the adult’s and four in the children’s models. Such stoppers are situated in the rear of the right skate by default, but there is the option to change them to the left skate according to the user’s preference. Nevertheless, these skates allow other braking manoeuvres, which are advisable in certain circumstances as with very loose gravel the stopper losses its adherence.

As said before, the Skorpions offer us a new skating experience on pavement and other surfaces. They allow us to roll over terrains which we had never dreamt of while being on wheels. Nevertheless, the Skorpions cannot be compared with a mountain bike because skates can never reach the speed and the gliding of a bike, but they have managed to conquer new surfaces that many of us still have to discover.

When you climb onto skates of this kind you have to try and keep the basic position all the time; that is: bent knees, the body inclined a bit forward and hands in front of the body to keep balance better and avoid falling backwards. Also, as they are broader than conventional skates, the user has to separate them opening his/her legs further than hip level to avoid possible tripping.

Finally, the Skorpions are innovative skates that demand some physical tone and technical skill depending on the surface. They also allow us to enjoy places previously forbidden to skaters, so that we can learn and live our hobby from a new perspective. So, I encourage all people interested to try them because the experience is worth it.

For the Spanish version of this blog, see http://www.patinauta.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=134:rodando-con-los-skorpion&catid=5:material&Itemid=19

Here's one of the latest customer reviews recently received in an email from Melenie.

These Skates are the bees knees....My Daughter was the first in the family to receive a pair or Skorpion muiti Terran skates a few years ago, which was a real thumbs up, she had so much fun I had to give it them a try.... I Was HOOKED... so for Christmas 2009 the kids got me my own pair (the quadline).

Now I don't have to watch my Kids having fun, or wait my turn, I can skate with them......It makes great quality time for me and my children, my daughter is teaching me how to do the turns, how to stop and likes to race me down the hills, little hills so far- hehe, I havent fallen YET! (nearly)...

These skates are easier to master than others I have tried, It makes getting to shops faster and with little effort, its a nice way to get fit and not feel any discomfort of soreness from riding -Especially because you can wear your own comfy sneakers or shoes with them, they also have shock absorption and suspension too....I am very happy with these Skates, so much that I am thinking of getting my son a pair later down the track, he's only five but already tries to skate in ours and skates alright despite the fact they are way to big for him.....(I see they make skorpies for the under 8's hmmmmmmmm).

***Well I give these a big 10/10 you wont be disappointed...

Just before Christmas it was possible to get some enthusiastics together and do the first time Kite Skating in an empty Dam in Beaufort-West, South Africa.

The setting was perfect, low sun, dry dam, nice steady winds.

The Kite picked the wind up very quick and soon we were at the other side of the dam. On the way there was only dust behind the skater from the speed and all the little bumps and dips were no problem for the skates. It felt almost like waterskiing.

I think there is big potential for this in this country, especially in the countryside, where the sea is far. Also it would have been nice to be pulled by a car. So still some ideas for next time.

Since we can't speak German, here's a brief outline in English:

"If it hasn't snowed yet and the need to get out and practice your short swing is becoming unbearable, pick up your Skorpion Quadline skates and head off to the nearest road or pavement for some practice! The carving properties of the Skorpion Quadline allow for a near perfect simulation of the short swing (wedeln) for those who are looking for technical skiing and endurance training or for that fun factor prior to the winter season."

Wow! What an awesome event the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball at Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles was a couple of weeks ago. Skorpion was an exhibitor at the AVP Crocs Tour and I got a first hand look at the American women’s and men’s Olympic gold medallists in action. I did not realize how tall the players are.

Both gold medal teams won the Manhattan Beach competition.

As well as enjoying the volleyball I also had the great experience of introducing the American public to our Skorpion Skates.

They told me they loved how easy they are to use, the size adjustability and that they could wear their own shoes.

All models, the Quadline Street, the Multi Terrain and children’s SKORPIES proved to be very popular with AVP fans and I am sure that you will see more and more Skorpion Skaters along the boardwalks of the South Beach area of Los Angeles during the next few weeks, months and years.

Skorpion is really marking its mark in the US at the moment and I expect to see phenomenal growth and more people choosing Skorpion as their preferred skates.
